Steve Shelton, MD, FACEP is a Principal Consultant at Threat Suppression. Steven joined the company in 2024. Steve is a practicing emergency physician at Prisma Health Richland Hospital, a Level I trauma center located in Columbia, South Carolina. He has worked as Emergency Medicine Residency faculty at Richland Hospital since 1994. He has also served since 2011 as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Steve is board certified in both Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services.
Steve has filled many executive leadership positions at Prisma Health. Notably, he is the hospital’s Medical Director for Emergency and Disaster Management, and he served as the hospital’s Incident Commander during the 2009 H1N1 outbreak, 2014 Ebola outbreak, 2018 Amtrak collision, and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.
Steve served in the Army National Guard’s 163rd Support Battalion from 1988 and 2000, completing his duty at the rank of Major and the Brigade’s Surgeon. He was also the Lead Medical Manager for South Carolina Urban Search and Rescue Taskforce 1 from 2004-2008, and the medical advisor for the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2007-2016, advising all South Carolina field offices. He was also a member of the Tactical EMS Taskforce with the National Association of EMS Physicians.
Steve has served as a sworn deputy sheriff with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department since 2000. He served his entire career as the department’s Medical Director and as the Chief Tactical Physician with the department’s full-time SWAT team. Steve is a widely recognized expert in tactical EMS response and hostile mass casualty care.
Steve has received numerous awards during his career, including the South Carolina Emergency Physician of the Year, and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Excellence in Emergency Medicine Award. He has published more than 15 articles in peer-reviewed journals/textbooks, lectured at more than 150 conferences, and provided over 100 media interviews. He received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Pfeiffer College and his Doctor of Medicine from the East Carolina University School of Medicine. Steve completed his Emergency Medicine residency at Richland Memorial Hospital.
